Soi 8 has recently welcomed a new food and beverage spot that’s focusing on American comfort food and classic pop/rock music. It’s called American Bar & Grill and is located next to the Soi 6 shortcut on the second subsoi as you stroll down Soi 8 from the Skytrain.
The relatively small menu (for now) offers burgers and steaks as well as spaghetti and meatballs (below), some sandwiches (meatball and  cheese steak) and salads and what the owners claim is the best apple pie in Bangkok (see right). Side dishes of onion rings, potato salad, cole slaw and mashed potatoes with gravy round out most of the rest of the American portion of the menu along with authentic Buffalo wings — using Frank’s hot sauce of course — making this a haven for people who like traditional, simple American fare.
It’s not all food from the other side of the world, however, as there are also about 10 Thai dishes to choose from that are examples of comfort food for Thais. You’ll find tom yum goong, pad Thai, red curry, pat krapao and others that represent basic Thai cooking.
An important part of the whole concept here is the classic music that is played here exclusively. We’re not talking about Beethoven and Mozart but rather The Beatles, Stones, The Who, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, etc. If you don’t like the musical selection being played at most of the pubs and bars around Sukhumvit then this place may offer the kind of ambience you want.
Another aspect of American Bar & Grill that sets it apart from many other area watering holes is the type of promotions and specials that are offered on a regular basis. For an example, you can get pitchers of margaritas (see right) and also White Russians widely known as the Dude’s drink of choice (see left). The Dude will not be there to serve them in person, however he is there in spirit so the place has that going for it as well.
Some of the nightly specials are unique also, with the week starting off with Steak Night on Mondays. The two steaks on the menu — Wagyu flank steak and a NY strip — are offered at 50% off the regular price, which is quite reasonable to begin with so this is the night to check out the beef here which is all chilled and not frozen, by the way. In fact, the only frozen items on the menu are ice cream and french fries. Everything else is fresh from local markets.
And new menu items just added include a grilled half chicken, fresh salmon from Norway, beef stew and a Sicilian-style pork chop among others.
Wednesday night is already turning into a popular night as well since it’s Men’s Night and men drink selected beers and cocktails for free from 7-8 PM. And for the ladies Friday night is the night to visit as all drinks are two for one all night long for all ladies, even the ones with deep voices and big feet.
American Bar & Grill is offering a new place to relax and enjoy good food and music so it might be worth your time to check it out soon.
